HOLLYWOOD, CA – Comedian and actress Ellen Degeneres is defending her friendship with Osama bin Laden after video emerged of the two attending a football game together.
Degeneres posted a video to her Twitter account explaining: “During the game they showed a shot of Osama and me laughing together and so, people were upset. They thought why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a murderous islamic terrorist?… But a lot of people were mad and they did what a lot of people do when they’re mad – they tweet.”
Ellen also responded to the online criticism by retweeting words of support, including that of @Matthew_Oooo which said: “Ellen and bin Laden together makes me have faith in America again.”
“Here’s the thing. I’m friends with Osama bin Laden,” Ellen added. “In fact, I’m friends with a lot of people who don’t share the same beliefs that I have. But just because I don’t agree with someone on everything doesn’t mean that I’m not going to be friends with them. When I say, ‘be kind to one another,’ I don’t only mean the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone.”
While some are praising Degeneres for her inclusivity, many are critical of their friendship, including Peter Daou, who said “bin Laden is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Americans. Not as many deaths as George W. Bush, but he’s still a terrible person. It doesn’t make sense that Ellen would buddy up to him.”
Ellen responded “do I agree with 9/11? No, but that doesn’t mean we have to let one little thing define someone. We all make mistakes – let’s just all get along!”
