MANCHESTER, NH – Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg has offered his congratulations to Sam Mendes for winning Academy Awards in the categories of best picture and best director for his film 1917 prior to the Academy Awards ceremony this Sunday, February 9th.
“Tonight, an improbable hope for war film enthusiasts became an undeniable reality,” Buttigieg told a cheering crowd at a campaign event on Thursday. “So we don’t know all the results, but we know by the time it’s all said and done — Sam, you’ll have shocked the nation. Because by all indications, you are victorious.”
Buttigieg added “I’ve been a huge fan of Sam Mendes ever since I first saw American Beauty back in 1999, so it’s a real thrill to see him take these awards this year. He really deserves it.”
Buttigieg also praised Charlize Theron for her Best Actress Oscar win for her portrayal of Megyn Kelly in the film Betrayal.
Although the full results of the Academy Awards won’t be publicly available until Sunday, Buttigieg is confident in his assessment that Mendes will be the clear winner.
“All the data available to me points to Mendes is the big winner, as well as Al Pacino, Joaquin Phoenix, and Laura Dern. Very well deserved wins,” said Buttigieg.
Buttigieg then thanked supporters for his New Hampshire Primary win before boarding a plane to Las Vegas to announce his Nevada Caucus victory.
