Beto O’Rourke Now Working at Hot Topic

EL PASO, TX – Two months after suspending his campaign for President of the United States, former congressman Beto O’Rourke was recently spotted working at an El Paso-area Hot Topic store.

“I was at the mall and I saw a sign for a six dollar t-shirt sale at Hot Topic, so I ducked in to see if there was anything worth getting,” explained Chad Lundgren, 23, adding “as I’m browsing through the shirts, some guy asks me if I’m finding everything okay, and I turn around and see Beto O’Rourke standing there. I thought he might have been just shopping or whatever, but I saw he had a lanyard with a bunch of punk band buttons on it, and realized he was actually working there.”

According to sources, O’Rourke took the job at the Sundland Park Mall Hot Topic store as a seasonal employee in mid-November, but pleased with his work ethic, management offered him a permanent position.

“We hired Beto and about six other kids to help us handle the boost in holiday traffic in November,” explained Store Manager Jenn Burroughs, 28. “Since he came to work on time everyday and was doing a really good job with sales and merchandizing, we offered him a permanent position on the Hot Topic team. Only two of the other hires made it to Christmas, and both of them were let go after their seasonal employment ended on January 2nd.”

Prior to O’Rourke’s presidential bid, he was a member of several bands during and after college including Swipe, Fragile Gang, and Foss, which gained moderate attention in the underground music scene. That experience has led him to find success interacting with customers and up-selling licensed band merchandise.

When reached for comment, O’Rourke told BeetPress “after all the craziness of running a presidential campaign, I really just wanted a job where I clocked in, did my thing, and went home. It’s nice not having to think about fundraising benchmarks, poll numbers, or debate prep. I go to work, come home, drink a six pack, play PS4, rinse, and repeat. It’s actually pretty great.”

Asked about his future plans, O’Rourke indicated that he was eyeing an assistant manager position, saying “Beth’s planning on transferring to the Cielo Vista location in March because she moved in with her boyfriend near there, so either I or Chuck Gomez are getting promoted. I know I haven’t been working here as long has he has, but I’m hoping Jenn will see the quality of my work and offer me the position. It comes with added responsibility, I’d get the store keys and everything, but I think I’m up to the task.”

As of press time, BeetPress has confirmed that another former presidential candidate, Julian Castro, has just been offered a position as a home theater sales consultant at a San Antonio-area Best Buy.
