SOUTH BEND, IN – Continuing a family tradition, the Buttigieg family participated in an informal democratic primary straw poll Thursday after completing Thanksgiving dinner.
“We’re all fairly politically active in my family,” said Pete Buttigieg, the current mayor of South Bend, adding “and pretty much every year, we do a little informal election either at Thanksgiving or the 4th of July, pretty much any family gathering. It’s a lot of fun.”
Those who participated in the poll included Buttigieg’s mother Anne, husband Chasten, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
An mock ballot was created by Chasten Buttigieg prior to the festivities and included the current democratic candidates including former vice president Joe Biden, senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar, Kamala Harris, and Cory Booker, congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Buttigieg and Michael Bloomberg. Following dessert, each guest was given a ballot to fill out.
Upon completion of voting, Chasten collected the ballets and gave them to 13 year old Stacy Montgomery to tabulate in the family’s home office. Several minutes later, she returned to read the results to the eager attendees.
According to the results, Warren led with 33%, followed by Buttigieg in a strong second place with 29%, Sanders with 19%, Biden with 10%, and Klobuchar and Harris trailing with 5% each.
“As we’re seeing in New Hampshire and Iowa, Mayor Pete is steadily climbing in the polls. Within the Buttigieg family, he’s now within striking distance of Warren and holds a comfortable lead over Biden and Sanders,” CNN political commentator Chris Cillizza told BeetPress.
As of press time, BeetPress has confirmed that Buttigieg had committed an additional $2.5 million in television advertising focused on reaching Buttigieg family members.
