PLAINS, GA – Ending months of speculation, former Georgia Governor and 39th President of the United States Jimmy Carter has announced that he will seek the democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential race.

Speaking in front of a crowd of around 200 at the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, the former president laid out his platform of nationalized healthcare, combatting global warming, strengthening global diplomatic relations, and securing the release of 52 American diplomats held hostage in Iran.

Carter, who will be 96 on election day, is by far the oldest candidate, but pundits are quick to point out that age doesn’t seem to be a factor for democratic voters. The top two polling candidates, former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, are 76 and 77 respectively. Although he held the presidency from 1977 – 1981, current laws allow him to seek another term in the Oval Office.

Those critical of Carter’s run have voiced concerns about another older, white man entering the race, including CNN political commentator Chris Cillizza, noting “the democrats choice should be female or should be of color, someone like, oh, I don’t know, Kamala Harris comes to mind as someone best positioned to represent the democratic party in 2020”.

Others, such as Brooklyn-based part time bartender, blogger, and self-identified hipster Harvey Nichols, have welcomed the news. He told BeetPress “as someone who owns an underwood typewriter, a victrola, and several pieces of midcentury furniture, I’m supporting Jimmy Carter. He an outsider, builds houses not walls, and he represents the values that my generation looks for in a candidate”.

The former president has several advantages as he enters the race including name recognition, especially among older democrats and baby boomers, a lack of notable scandals over the past four decades, and vast appeal in the Appalachia and the south, areas where democrats have struggled in previous elections. Carter hopes that his Christian beliefs and status as a World War 2 veteran will help him flip states such as Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee into the democratic column in 2020.

As of press time, Jimmy Carter is traveling on horseback to Iowa to begin a 99-county tour of the state in advance of the 2020 Caucus.
